Abstract

Have you ever wondered how the place where we live can affect our attentional capacity? In this scientific article, the impact of urban and rural residential area on attentional performance in the province of Imbabura was explored. Using the Attentional Network Test (ANT) instrument, we discovered results that reveal significant differences between environments. A total of 617 participants were involved, divided between urban and rural residents, where a relationship was revealed in the attentional performance during the application of the ANT in residents of different demographic zones.

The results revealed that there is a significant difference (p<0.05) in the average number of hits in the first loop of the ANT, urban area showed a lower mean (0.94708 ±0.037368), while rural area obtained a higher mean (0.95205±0.033413); this suggests that the residential area may have an influence on attentional performance, in addition, the absence of significant difference in the second loop was discovered, suggesting a possible learning bias of the ANT stimuli.

This study contributes to the limited knowledge on attention and residential area in Latin America, highlighting the importance of considering the environmental setting when studying cognitive processes; the present finding opens new opportunities to rigorously investigate this complex relationship.
