Abstract

The purpose of this article is to show the capacities for adaptation and coping through resilience and empowerment of young people in contexts of poverty in four cities in the state of Veracruz, Mexico: Xalapa, Coatzacoalcos, Poza Rica and El Puerto de Veracruz. The research project from which this text is derived was funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDCR) of Canada. This study was carried out through a mixed methodology that included 20 focus groups and 46 interviews, a survey was conducted with the participation of 311 young people between 15 and 24 years of age. The qualitative part emphasizes subjective elements that allow understanding resilience and empowerment, and the quantitative part describes social problems. As part of the results, 71.6% had problems with lighting, 64.0% with water, 73% said that there was a lack of public surveillance. It is observed that there is a set of practices in the context of poverty that are transmitted generationally and that are social inequalities that limit opportunities; however, according to Chiavola et al. (2008) there coexist practices of empowerment and resilience that allow overcoming the context. As part of the conclusions, it was determined that despite the problems and challenges that young people face in the family, school and community, some young people transcend in the social structures of this group of young people who were named as resilient.
