Relationship between prolonged use of mobile devices and the cognitive attention process of fifth-year elementary school students at the Dayuma Educational Unit

Abstract

The present study analyzes the relationship between the prolonged use of mobile devices and attention in fifth-year basic students of the Dayuma Educational Unit. The research is based on neuroeducation, a discipline that explores how technology influences critical brain functions such as attention. Through a mixed approach, which combines quantitative and qualitative methods, data were collected through surveys, and analysis of the neurological test “neuropsi”, from which only the attentional process section was taken for the study. The results show that there is a strong negative correlation (-0.81953) between the time of use of mobile devices and attention span, with a p value of 0.009572, which indicates a statistically significant relationship. Furthermore, 42.9% of the students showed attention difficulties and 23.8% presented serious alterations in attention, suggesting a considerable impact on their academic performance. It is concluded that the integration of conscious educational practices and the regulation of exposure time to devices are essential to mitigate negative effects and promote healthier learning.
